DAA Contract Award

Bowen Construction Ltd has been awarded a contract by the DAA for the Design & Build of the Terminal 2 multi-storey car par phase 1.  Phase 1 of the development consists of circa 1300 car park spaces and is part of a phased development of the 2562 multi storey car park and hotel development. 

Bowen Construction will deliver the MSCP in conjunction with Project Architects and O’Connor Sutton Cronin.
 
The project comprises all necessary works to provide a fit for purpose multi-storey car park including public concourse, car hire shell & core and T2 concourse bridge constructed over a footprint area of approximately 2.7Ha. The total new build area as divided over the ground, level 1, level 2 and level 3 is approximately 42,000sq.m. The project further includes the design, supply and installation of all principal M&E, specialist car parking system and ICT systems in accordance with the DAA‘s requirements

Queen’s University – Contract Award


Bowen Construction has secured the contract, General Building Work – Upper Malone (Phase 3) from Queen’s University Belfast. The contract involves the construction of a main clubhouse to include receptions, changing facilities, bar/social/viewing area, seminar area and free weights area. Also included is the provision of a covered grandstand attached to the main clubhouse to cater for approximately 300 people, various accommodations, competition and soccer pitches. The works are programmed to commence in March 2010

Ballymote Bowen Project Receives a Ministerial Thumbs-UP

Belfast’s New Metropolitan Arts Centre (MAC)

The project has a construction value of some €15M, and is being undertaken by the Bowen Mascott Joint Venture Company.

The 5,500sq m structure will be six storeys high and boast two theatres, three visual art galleries, dance studios, rehearsal rooms and a bar/restaurant. At a height of 32m (105ft), the MAC tower will give Belfast’s skyline a new landmark and create an iconic image to join the Albert Clock, the Harland & Wolff cranes and St Anne’s Cathedral spire

Opera Lane Has Arrived! December 2009


Bowen Construction’s recent completion of the Opera Lane development provides Cork with its first new shopping street in almost 200 years. This landmark €87m project was constructed to a demanding programme and completed in time for the busy Christmas shopping period. Developed by O’Callaghan Properties Ltd, Opera Lane provides over 320,000sq ft of high-end retail, residential and basement car-parking uses. The impressive line-up of tenants, including H&M, TopShop, Gap, New Look, River Island and Next, will add to Cork’s growing retail offer.

Bowen QS On Top Of The World !!!


Bowen quantity surveyor Kieran ‘Fraggy’ Murphy  in happy circumstances on top of the recently completed €87 million Opera Lane project for O’Callaghan Properties. Kieran had just been informed by Denis Walsh, the Cork hurling manager that he was to be captain of the Cork Hurling team for 2010.

Ballymote Community & Sports Centre


7th August 2009

The Bowen Mascott JV was awarded the contract to construct the Ballymote Community & Sports Centre,for Down District Council.

The contract includes  a new sports complex to include main sports hall, boxing club, gym, youth club and ancillary rooms with associated car parking and relocation of existing playground adjacent to new hall. Also included is a nursery, drop-in centre and extensions to offices and supermarket to with associated environmental improvements.

Dublin City Walls – Oct 2009


Bowen is pleased to announce the handover of the Dublin City Walls Conference Suite to Dublin City Council

The project was designed and constructed around a section of the Hiberno Viking City Wall dating from circa 1200AD, a national monument protected by ministerial order.  The construction was completed in a live working environment adjacent to the DCC offices and a crèche; in addition the DCC Traffic Department fibre optic traffic light cabling for the City ran through the site and remained live at all times.  The scope of works included an extensive European oak joinery package, acoustic rated folding walls, electrically operated switch glass privacy screens, and an AV fit out with flexibility to suit an open conference space or four individual meeting rooms when the folding walls are in pace.

The facility now houses the My City exhibition, an interactive display open to the public of the history and the future development plans of Dublin City and environs.

Kinsale Wastewater Treatment Plant

The contract for the construction and operation of the new Kinsale Wastewater Treatment Plant was signed on Wednesday June 3rd 2009 at County Hall.

The Contract was awarded to the ''EPS - Bowen Consortium'', comprising EPS from Mallow and Bowen Construction.

Funding for the €5.6M contract is being provided by the Department of the Environment, Heritage, & Local Government under the Water Services Investment Programme. The contract involves the construction of a new waste water treatment plant at Cappagh, Kinsale, Co. Cork to serve a population equivalent to 10,000 persons. The construction period on the site will be for approximately 12 months. The Contract provides for the operation of the treatment plant by EPS-Bowen for an initial 20 year period.

Bowen Group Becomes Official Sponsor to Munster Rugby

The Bowen Group announced today that it has become an official sponsor of Munster Rugby. 

The significant three-year sponsorship deal will see The Bowen Group act as an exclusive supporter of Munster Rugby’s Heineken Cup Match-Day Hospitality functions and other flagship events, which play a key part in building the unique bond between the team and its supporters. The Bowen Group played a similar supportive role as lead sponsor of this year’s 6 Nations Under-18 Festival, which brought the cream of young European rugby talent to Cork for a highly successful tournament over Easter 2008.

Bowen Construction Wins Contract for New Church of Ireland Deanery

Bowen Construction has won a contract to build the new Church of Ireland Deanery in Cork.  The new Deanery will be built on the site of the existing building at the Episcopal Palace with the entrance off Gilabbey Street.  Construction will begin later this month and is due for completion in February 2009.

BMD reinforces its leadership position in the Pharma sector

BMD has recently secured a number of major contracts for mechanical process engineering works in the Pharmaceutical/Biotech sector with the multinationals Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and Eli Lilly.

The MSD project entails the supply and installation of process piping and other equipment for new R&D and Formulation facilities at the company’s manufacturing plant in Ballydine, Clonmel, Co. Tippearary.  The Eli Lilly project entails fabrication and installation of process piping for a new biotech manufacturing facility in Kinsale, Co. Cork which will be partly built through modular construction methods.  BMD is also responsible for installation and upgrade of the utility services to support both the new biotech facility and existing production buildings on the Kinsale site.

BMD has also recently been awarded the annual maintenance contract on the new biotech manufacturing facility of Centocor Biologics in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork, and has just successfully completed the design and build of a Potable Water System for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in Carrigaline, Co. Cork – the first such D&B project undertaken by GSK worldwide.

Bowen plc awarded contract for new Arts & Science building at Farnborough college

Currently on site, Bowen plc has recently completed the enabling works for the new Arts & Science Building at The Sixth Form College, Farnborough in Hampshire, including the provision of temporary accommodation for the 270 students within the faculty departments.

On completion of the move, Bowen will demolish the existing building and commence construction of the new block in June 2008.  The new building will have a total floor area of approximately 3,000sqm spanning three storeys and a roof top plant room.

The project architects are Broadway Malyan and the project is due for completion in July 2009.

The Bowen Group proudly supports the permanent tsb Ethnic Entrepreneur of the Year Awards

Asheesh Dewan, owner of the Jaipur chain of Indian restaurants in Dublin and Wicklow, has been named the permanent tsb Ethnic Entrepreneur of the Year 2008. Mr. Dewan, who won the Best Service Ethic Entrepreneur category sponsored by The Bowen Group, was also presented with the overall award at a ceremony in the Morrison Hotel in Dublin on Friday 18th April.

The annual Awards, divided into five categories; Best Business Idea, Service, Technology, Social and Emerging Ethnic Entrepreneur, aims to promote participation and community integration of evolving ethnic entrepreneurs. The judging panel, chaired by John R Bowen, Chairman and Chief Executive of The Bowen Group, considered the innovation and vision of candidates, as well as growth and impact on employment.  Lord Diljit Rana MBE was honoured with the judges’ Special Award in recognition of his exceptional contribution in entrepreneurship.

Minister for Integration Policy within the Irish government, Conor Lenihan TD, said: "The ethnic community continues to make an outstanding contribution to the Irish economy and to our overall reputation both nationally and internationally.  The challenge is to embrace diversity and inclusivity both socially and economically and maximise the successes and entrepreneurial skills of the ethnic community for the common good."

John R Bowen addresses PwC/Foresight gathering in Trinity College Dublin

John R Bowen yesterday gave the keynote address on the Future of the Construction Industry as the guest speaker at the PwC/Foresight Business breakfast in Trinity College Dublin.


Founded in 1972, the Foresight Business Group is a Trinity College student body which, since its inception, has been driven by the idea to provide a forum for interaction between leading individuals of the Irish business community and the business students of Trinity College. Over the past three decades, the Group has continued to develop and grow in strength, attracting a diverse range of keynote speakers of the highest calibre to attend many of its high-profile and illustrious events.  Through its association with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the Group has maintained a level of distinction and professionalism that has continued to drive the success of the Group. Bowen-Somague JV awarded contract for the €161 million N7 project

Bowen-Somague JV, a joint venture beween Bowen Construction and Somague (Portugal), has been awarded a contract by the National Roads Authority (NRA) to design and construct the N7 Castletown to Nenagh dual carriageway.

The project forms part of the National Development Plan’s (NDP) to improve the N7 Dublin to Limerick Road and will include a high quality dual carriageway, approximately 36kms long with 46 structures including over-bridges, underpasses and culverts.  The existing N7 carriageway will remain in place to serve local road needs.  

Construction will start at the most easterly junction of the Nenagh bypass in North Tipperary and finish in County Laois at the proposed Borris-in-Ossory interchange which will be constructed as part of the M7/M8 project.

The Bowen-Somague JV is currently completing the €40 million design and build of the new Irish Rail Train Care Depot in Portlaoise.  Together with Sacyr, the Spanish parent company of Somague, the JV has also been awarded an €85 million contract by the RPA for the extension of the LUAS Line B1 from Sandyford to Cherrywood in Dublin.

The contracting authority for the N7 Joint Venture is Laois County Council and McCarthy Grontmij are the consulting engineers on the project. The project will commence shortly and is due for completion in 2010.

The Bowen Group to Sponsor U18 Six Nations Festival

The Bowen Group has been announced by the Irish Rugby Football Union as official sponsor of the Under 18 Six Nations Rugby Festival 2008 that will be hosted in Cork this Easter. 

The brightest young talent of European rugby will showcase their skills across the nine matches of the festival, which will be played from March 24th to April 2nd.  Festival matches will be played at Musgrave Park, UCC Mardyke, Cork Constitution RFC and Highfield RFC, with Ireland kicking off the festival under lights at Musgrave Park against Wales on Wednesday 26th March. 
Admission to festival matches is free and rugby supporters from across Ireland are encouraged to come out and see the stars of the future in action.

Commenting on the hosting of the festival in Cork and The Bowen Group sponsorship, IRFU President Der Healy said, “I have no doubt that all those involved in rugby in Cork and throughout Munster will take great pleasure in welcoming the visiting teams and spectators to this proud rugby region for what promises to be a great celebration of the game we all love, played by the best young talent from across Europe.”

€90 million Cork project for O’Callaghan Properties

Bowen Construction has concluded negotiations with O’Callaghan Properties for the overall development of a central site within Cork city that encompasses the main commercial thoroughfares of Patrick Street, Academy Street, Emmett Place and Bowling Green Street.

The €90 million development will create a new pedestrianised shopping street in the city centre with a total of 315,000 sq. ft. of high-end retail and residential units within a six storey building over a two-storey basement that will also include car parking.

There are a number of protected structures within the footprint of the site, such as the façades on the former offices of the Irish Examiner and the Automobile Association, and particular care is being taken in the engineering design and construction activity to ensure the integrity of these structures is maintained throughout.  Bowen Construction and O’Callaghan Properties are also working closely together with the local business and residential community to minimise any disruption during the construction and to keep people fully informed on progress with the development.

The development is designed by Project Architects and is due for completion in October 2009.

Bowen wins €26 million Tyndall National Institute contract

Bowen Construction has secured the contract to build the Tyndall National Institute’s new €26 million laboratory building at University College, Cork.

The new laboratory building at Tyndall will be a key element in the growth of the Institute which provides a focal point for Information & Communications Technology (ICT) research in Ireland. The building, which will be specially constructed to create a flexible range of low-vibration laboratory and cleanroom environments with control on acoustic noise, radio frequency and electromagnetic interference, will allow the Institute to host greater numbers of researchers from across Ireland and from international research laboratories in the areas of photonics, electronics, materials and nanotechnologies.

Bowen Construction is working with project architects, Scott Tallon Walker, and project managers, PM Group, on the Tyndall project which is currently under construction and is due for completion in December 2008.

Bowen begins office development in Dublin 6

Bowen Construction has commenced works on a commercial office development project of 5,000sqm located at the junction of Grand Parade Road and Ranelagh Road in Dublin 6, adjacent to the LUAS tram stop at Charlemont.  The project is valued at €14m and is due for completion in December 2008.  The client is Bernard Costelloe, while the architects and structural engineers for the project are OMS Architects and Muir Associates respectively.

Bowen wins retail project in Cork

Bowen Construction has been engaged by Shipton Group for the development of a multi-storey shopping centre, with Tesco as the anchor unit.  The development also includes a 3-storey office block and car park, all to be integrated into the existing building whilst keeping it open for business throughout the construction period.  The site is located in Douglas Village, Cork and the overall project value is approximately €80M. The project is due for completion in 2009.

Bowen plc wins project at the Old Bailey in London

Bowen plc has commenced work on a 9,000sqm office development at 7-10 Old Bailey adjacent to the famous law courts in the heart of London.  The project, valued at £24m, is being carried out on behalf of Marylebone Warwick Balfour (MWB) for Standard Life who will occupy the building on its completion in 2009.

BMD contract for mechanical services on Ireland's tallest building

BMD has secured a contract valued at €6 million from developer O’Flynn Construction Ltd. for the mechanical services installation at the landmark Elysian development in the heart of Cork city.

“We are delighted to win this contract on such a flagship project against very strong competition” said Mike Walsh, Managing Director, BMD. “High-rise buildings are likely to become much more commonplace in our cities over the next decade and this project will position BMD as a very strong and credible contractor for similar developments.”

The Elysian project is a development of over 74,000 sqm including an 18-storey tower block, the tallest building in Ireland.  It incorporates residential, office and retail space as well as a 2-storey basement car park and a central energy centre.  BMD brings to the project the ability to undertake off-site manufacturing of the utility and plant rooms utlising its own workshop facilities in Cork. This has created significant time savings on the construction programme, allowing completion of the development within the client’s required 18-month schedule.

New Managing Director at Bowen Construction Ltd.

John R. Bowen, Chairman and Chief Executive, The Bowen Group, is pleased to announce that Pat O’Sullivan has been appointed as Managing Director of Bowen Construction Ltd. in succession to Barry Crowley who remains with the company as an executive director.

Pat O’Sullivan is a Civil Engineering graduate of UCC and has an MBA from UCD. Prior to joining Bowen Construction Ltd., he spent two years as Managing Director of Kingspan Off-Site in the UK, before which he held a number of senior roles with CRH, both in North America and the UK.
